20 Years Experience

Professional Summary

Dr Surabhi Madan is one of the most revered infectious disease specialists practising in India. Besides being a doctor at Ahmedabad’s Marengo Asia CIMS Hospital, Dr Madan is also the founder of Tathaagat Infectious Diseases Clinic in Ahmedabad. She started working as a registered doctor more than 21 years ago and has been practising as an infectious disease specialist for 12 years.

Over the years, Dr Madan has treated patients with various infections, including fungal, bacterial, viral, and topical infections. She is particularly known for handling some serious cases involving immunocompromised patients, i.e., those with a history of transplant and cancer patients.

Academic Excellence

Dr Madan completed her MBBS and MD in General Medicine from the Government Medical College, Surat, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. She won a gold medal for securing the highest marks and achieving the #1 rank in her MD final-year exam.

While practising general medicine, she identified her affinity towards treating infectious diseases. This compelled her to join the P.D. Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre’s Fellowship in Infectious Diseases (FID) program. She completed her FID from this prestigious institution in Mumbai during the academic year 2012-2013.

As Dr Madan continues to excel in her field as a practising infectious disease specialist, her fondness for academics remains the same. She keeps publishing editorials and papers in journals around the globe and has also contributed to multiple textbooks. Dr Madan also frequently attends prestigious national and international conferences to present her research. Whatever the media may be, her area of interest remains the same, i.e. infectious disease.

Her extreme love for academics encouraged her to run a special training program at the Marengo Asia CIMS Hospital. The program titled ‘Fellowship in Infectious Diseases’ trains doctors on various aspects of managing and treating infectious diseases. Its main goal is to educate medical practitioners about controlling infection, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical management of various infectious diseases. The program is designed primarily to provide professionals with postgraduate medical degrees like DNB or MD in general medicine with the opportunity to obtain sub-speciality expertise.

Areas of Expertise

Being an infectious disease specialist, Dr Madan has handled a wide array of infections. However, her areas of expertise revolve around complex cases. Here are a few examples:

She has been involved in the treatment and management of numerous complex cases of drug-resistant TB.

She has vast experience in treating HIV patients, particularly those suffering from complex opportunistic infections.

Dr Madan is a tropical disease specialist. She is an expert in diagnosing and treating conditions such as severe diarrhoea, malaria, dengue, etc.

She specialises in the treatment of infections in organ transplant patients and individuals with cancer. These are immunocompromised people having an increased vulnerability to developing infections with severe symptoms.

Dr Madan has managed multiple critical cases of hospital-acquired viral and bacterial infections.

She specialises in treating and managing prosthetic implant infections.

She is an expert in treating complex infections of the joints and bones, and other serious conditions such as infections affecting the central nervous system and pneumonia.

Treatment Philosophy

Accurate Diagnosis: Dr Madan believes in the power of timely and correct diagnosis. She examines all her patients thoroughly and recommends diagnostic tests based on the results of the evaluation process. The combination of tests and manual checkups allows her to make an accurate diagnosis of all her patients quickly.

Timely Intervention: She encourages patients to visit doctors whenever the first signs of infection arrive and to avoid self-medication. According to her, the more you wait, the more severe your infection becomes.

Rational Antibiotic Use: Dr Madan urges people to be responsible about antibiotic use. According to her, the habit of self-medication has made antibiotic administration for viral conditions like mild diarrhoea, cough and cold, etc. extremely common. She discourages such habits. According to her, antibiotics should be prescribed only when blood work and other symptoms strongly indicate the presence of bacterial infections.

Patient Education: Dr Madan keeps emphasising the importance of patient education. She believes that infection prevention is possible only by educating the public about the importance of hygiene and vigilance.

Compassionate Care: She treats all her patients with equal importance and compassion.

Commitment to Infectious Disease Care

Besides being a successful doctor, Dr Madan is also an advocate for public health and preventive healthcare literacy. She keeps organising educational sessions for students to debunk health myths and educate young minds about complex health issues. She also uses various digital platforms to spread awareness for adult vaccination.
